The role of coaching here

Wild Wisdom Artistry’s coaching materials describe a creative partnership around personal goals, reflection and next steps. The consent materials are explicit: coaching does not diagnose or treat mental disorders and does not replace therapy or other professional care.

Creative expression or a supportive conversation should not be presented as a substitute for treatment. If you already work with a mental-health professional, discuss how any additional support would fit with that care.

What psychotherapy can offer

Psychotherapy is mental-health treatment, usually provided by a licensed mental-health professional. Depending on the approach and the person’s needs, it can address distressing thoughts, emotions and behaviors, and support day-to-day functioning and quality of life.

The National Institute of Mental Health explains that different therapies have evidence for different concerns. Choosing a treatment approach should take account of a person’s needs and circumstances with guidance from a mental-health professional. Read NIMH’s introduction to psychotherapies.

Questions to bring to a provider

  • What qualifications and experience are relevant to my concerns?
  • What does this service include, and what falls outside its scope?
  • How will we discuss whether this is a good fit?
